Overview

Open Black Fuse Box with open cover and parallel fuses with microswitch

In association with the Current Collector Devices or the pantographs, the Fuse boxes house the 750VDC, 1.500VDC and 2.000 VDC fuses to protect the infeed of the current on-board. Mersen offer a large range of isolated Fuse boxes with the possibility to equip them with advanced technical capabilities integrating smart and connected solutions to enable you to pilot and anticipate your maintenance or energy measurement.

On-board fuse boxes are installed on Metro, trains, catenary less tramway and electric buses. They are a mandatory critical components of protection.

Benefits

Uses of Fuse boxes

Mersen on-board fuse boxes are designed to be very compact and adaptable to your configurations. They can be converted to connection boxes for connecting electrical cables (see separately).

Mersen have a large library of existing fuse boxes solutions but also Mersen can design, create and customized the box for your application adapting its shape, dimensions and cable connections.

They are reliable and offer low maintenance with a whole life support. They are designed to withstand and answer the shock and vibration and also fire and smoke international regulations.

As they are at the nearest point from the energy source, the fuses boxes are ideally positioned to integrate innovative and connected functions like the Energy measurement.

  • Measure the real consumed energy
  • Measure the re-injected energy to the grid when braking
  • Teach the eco driving to the train drivers
  • Check the voltage value on the catenary (sub station)
  • For security reasons, house a Voltage detection device
  • The micro switches of the fuses (fuse melting information)

Spare part kits

Mersen will supply you all Spare parts kits to guarantee the reliability and increase the life time of your Fuse boxes including :

  • cables,
  • Fuses and micro switches,
  • Cable glands,
  • Windows,
  • sealing,
  • Hardware and
  • all necessary components

Capabilities

Largest range of the market, Reliability, Low maintenance cost, Innovation

The comprehensive range of Fuse box is designed for all kind of configurations:

  • Regular steel wheel Metro
  • Pneumatic wheel Metro,
  • Monorail
  • Driverless metro applications
  • Catenary less tramway and
  • Electrical buses

They can operate under 750VDC, 1.500VDC and 2.000 VDC.

The principle is simple, Mersen have “naked” (standard sizes and shapes boxes) boxes that you can easily adapt to your configuration:

  • The number of circuits (1, 2 or 3)
  • The number of cables getting in and out of the box,
  • the nature and the size of the cable glands (metal, plastic) ,
  • the connection inside the box for the cable shoes and
  • the number and type of the DC fuses.

Design Guide

Design

Mersen fuse box are made with a Sheet Molding Compound (SMC): Polyester resin reinforced with 25% glass fiber, dyed in the mass offering the best ageing characteristics and Higher weatherproof and dust protection.

Mersen offers a large library of compact existing solutions which can be adapted to your solutions (cable entries and exists, kind of cable glands, inside connections, type and quantity of fuses) and avoid Non Recurring costs.

Voltage rating up to 2000 VDC

The fuse boxes can house circuits under 750, 1.500 and 2.000 VDC.

Installations

The Fuses boxes can be installed in any positions (horizontal, vertical, side) as close as possible from the Current Collector Devices on the bogie or from the pantograph on the train roof.

Current rating up to 3600 Amp

The fuse boxes can house up to 6 fuses un parallel offering 3.600 Amp.

Number of circuits

The fuse boxes can be organised to house 3 different circuits in one single box.

Fuse blown indication

If the fuses are not equipped with micro switch, the fuse boxes can be equipped with windows to enable the maintenance teams to check the status of the trip indicator of the fuse.

Energy measurement

As they are at the nearest point from the energy source, the fuses boxes are ideally positioned to integrate Energy measurement functions.
