2020 National Electrical Code Changes
The National Electrical Code, which sets standards for electrical installations and wiring safety in the United States, is updated every three years. The 2020 Revision includes a couple of revolutionary changes for Surge Protective Devices.
NEC 2020 Code Article 230.67 States:
- All Service supplying dwelling units shall be provided with a surge protective device (SPD).
A dwelling unit is defined as every unit that provides a complete and independent living facility for one or more individuals. Examples include houses, apartments, mobile homes, dorm rooms and any other units that provide means of living, sleeping, cooking and sanitation. - The surge protective device shall be an integral part of the service equipment or shall be located immediately adjacent to it.
- Surge Protective Device shall be Type 1 or Type 2 SPD.
Type 1 and Type 2 SPDs are permanently connected devices intended for installation between the service transformer and branch panel (Type 1) or on the load side of the branch panel (Type 2).
All acceptable SPD type 1 or Type 2 devices are tested, validated and listed to the UL 1449 standard.
Type 3 SPDs, such as cord-connected surge strips, do not satisfy the new NEC 2020 Code requirement.
